bullet  Mr. Sven F. Tollin, Chief Statistician of the INSG, presentation at the "2009 China International Nickel & Cobalt Industry Forum", which was held in Guangzhou, China P.R., 16-18 November 2008.



bullet  The following speakers made presentations at the INSG Meetings, which were held in Lisbon, Portugal in 5, 6 and 7 October 2009:

Mr. Markus Moll , Managing Director & Senior Market Analyst of SMR: Steel & Metals Research, Austria, made a presentation on “Market drivers for Nickel-alloys”.

Mr. Bian Gang , China Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA), China, made a presentation on “Nickel in China”.

A presentation provided by Mr. Peter Kaumanns, ISSF, Belgium, on latest developments in the world stainless steel market was delivered on his behalf.

Mr. Michael Widmer , Metals Strategist, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch made a presentation on Nickel Pig Iron in China.

Mr. Benno Kratz from ELG, Germany spoke on the latest world trends in the supply and demand for stainless steel scrap from the point of view of a large processor.

Mr. Denis Lencou-Bareme from Eramet discussed the global nickel supply and demand situation.

The Secretariat updated members on the UNCSD process under which international meetings will be held in 2010 and 2011.

Mr. Sylvain Bintein , DG Environment, European Commission, Brussels, made a presentation on The EU Approach to Nickel Classification and its Consequences.

Mr. Stephen Barnett , President, Nickel Institute, made a presentation on REACH and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).



bullet  A well-attended Joint Study Groups’ Seminar was held on 7 October 2009 entitled “Post-crisis metals: What will be different?” (program) A representative of the World Bank presented an overview of the world economy and the prospects for recovery with a focus on mining and metals. A range of metal-specific presentations were made and discussed, and the impact of the responses by governments to the crisis were examined.

Mr. Paulo de Sa , Manager, Oil Gas and Mining Division, World Bank, made a presentation on Outlook for the global economy (including impact of stimulus packages), and implications for mining/metals.

Mr. Jim Lennon , Executive Director, Commodities Research, Macquarie, made a presentation on Nickel - Will the crisis result in permanent changes to nickel supply and demand patterns?

Mr. Abraao Carvalho , Head of Unit G3/Steel, non-ferrous metals, minerals and mineral products, DG Enterprise and Industry, European Commission, made a presentation on EU Response to Economic Crisis and relevant Policy issues for the Metals and Mining sector.

Dr. Gerhard Pariser , Heinz H. Pariser Alloy Metals & Steel Market Research, Germany, made a presentation on nickel use in alloy steels.

Dr. Andrew Mitchell , Nickel Industry Analyst, Brook Hunt & Associates Ltd., UK, spoke on nickel cost of production developments and possible future implications for supply and projects.

Mr. Peter Kaumanns , International Stainless Steel Forum, Belgium, spoke on the latest developments in the world stainless steel market.

Mr. Max Layton , Macquarie Research, made a presentation on the latest trends in Nickel Pig Iron in China.

Mr. Benno Kratz, ELG, Germany, spoke on the latest world trends in the supply and demand for stainless steel scrap from the point of view of a large processor.

Mr. Sven F. Tollin , Chief Statistician of the INSG, review of stainless steel scrap trade statistics.

Mr. Paul Gray, Goldman Sachs JBWere, made a presentation on the latest trends in World primary nickel supply and demand.

Mr. Curtis Stewart , INSG Head of Environment and Economics, made an update on “EHS regulations”.

Mr. Stephen Barnett , President of the Nickel Institute on “Regulatory Developments affecting Nickel including Read Across and REACH”.

Mr. Patrick Chevalier , Natural Resources Canada, gave a presentation on “UNCSD18 – An Opportunity to Showcase the Contribution of Mining, Minerals and Metals to Sustainable Development”.

Mr. Carlos de Melo Ribeiro , CEO of Siemens Portugal, spoke on how his company is confronting the economic recession.

A panel discussion on the subject of “The Nickel Market: More or Less Volatility?” drew on the participation of Dr. Andrew Mitchell of Brook, Hunt & Associates , Mr. Heinz Pariser of Pariser Allay Metals & Steel Research and Dr. Benedikt Zeumer of McKinsey.

Mr. Paul Anciaux , European Commission Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, spoke on “The EU Raw Materials Strategy”.

Mr. Curtis Stewart , INSG Head of Environment and Economics, made a presentation on the “Nickel in Batteries Report”.

Mr. Curtis Stewart , INSG Head of Environment and Economics, made a presentation on the “Market for Nickel Report”.



bullet  The International Copper Study Group (ICSG), the International Lead & Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) and the International Nickel Study Group (INSG) held a Energy Issues and Climate Change Policies Impacting on the Non-Ferrous Metals Industries Joint Seminar (program) , which took place in Lisbon, Portugal in 22 April 2009.
